We Have Entered the 'ber' Months

It’s September. I would like to say, “I love the cool air in the mornings and the changing leaves,” but who am I kidding? It’s Texas, and I think we are in second summer.

All kidding aside, we have definitely entered a new season here on the homestead.

We started schooling with the girls today, which means we are officially finding our new rhythm and routine after a very chaotic summer. It always takes a little while to get back into the swing of things. There are schedules to figure out, schoolwork to organize, activities starting back up, and somehow we still have to feed everyone three times a day.

But I have to admit, there is something I like about getting back into a routine. Summer is fun, but after a while, I’m ready for a little structure.

Eric is still spending every free moment he can at the shop. It’s coming along, but very slowly. There is still a lot to do, but it is really starting to take shape, and that makes all the work feel a little more real.

I think we’ll be picking up some of the last supplies this week, and I’m getting to the point where I can actually start thinking about how I want everything to look once we can finally fill the shelves.

I’m excited about that part.

For a long time, the shop has been a dream, and now it is beginning to look like a real little shop, and I cannot wait to see it filled with things we have made.

And then there’s fall.

I hope to finalize the fall On the Homestead Box this week and start working on some of the products. I have been thinking about this box for a while, and I’m excited to finally see it come together.

And while I’m thinking about fall, I’m also starting to think about Christmas.

Christmas?

I know. As a small business, we have to think ahead, but it is only 114 days away.

That number feels slightly terrifying.

There are ornaments to make, gifts to plan, products to photograph, and all the other little things that go along with getting ready for the busiest time of year. I’m trying to remind myself that I don’t have to do everything at once. One project at a time. One day at a time.

That may be my biggest lesson around here lately.

There is always something else that needs to be done. Something else that could be planned, made, cleaned, planted, photographed, or checked off the list. But sometimes the best thing we can do is just keep moving forward and enjoy where we are.

Right now, we are in a season of transition.

School is starting. The shop is taking shape. Fall is coming, even if Texas hasn’t quite gotten the memo yet. The garden is winding down, new projects are beginning, and Christmas is already creeping into my thoughts.

It’s a lot.

But it’s also exciting.

We’ve been working toward this for a long time, and I’m looking forward to sharing more of it with you as things begin to come together.

So, that’s what September looks like around here.

A little school. A little shop building. A little fall planning. A whole lot of work.

And hopefully, before too long, an open door.
